March 16th

Torture

There is nothing worse than seeing the first beautiful day of spring taunting you out of your work window.

March 15th

Blurry :(

I wanted to get a picture of the sign, part of it had burned out and instead of saying "Pier 1 Imports" it said "Pie Imports". There are very few things I like more than when a blown lightbulb changes the whole meaning.

March 14th

3.14

In honor of Pi day, I made Steak and Guinness pie. It was delicious.

March 13th

January 2006

When I don't mean them to my thoughts keep wandering back to Japan. When I was there I spent time in the center of the country - far away from where the earthquake and tsunami were - but everyone I met everywhere I travelled was so welcoming that I am heartbroken. I keep looking around and thinking about how easily everything we take for granted can be swept away.

March 12th

Squee!

Mariana could not be any more adorable. Huge squishy cheeks, tubular fat rolls and long, long eyelashes. We went fabric shopping (of course) and the Indian woman who helped us asked about her stork bite. Apparently is it very lucky. Although as far as I am concerned any baby that is born to Krista is as lucky as they come.

March 11th

Glo-Worm

Up to Chicago to see Krista, Mike and Mariana. I really want them to live closer than 3.5 hours...although if they have to be so far away I wish it was to the south.

March 10th

Ryan Bingham

Tonight we went to see Ryan Bingham at Birdies. Birdies is a dive. A total dive. Even after a shower we both smelled like cigarette smoke but it was worth it. I have only heard a few of his songs and he didn't play any of them. What I really liked was going out to a show.

I love that John takes music so seriously. He takes time to seek out and listen to new music in a way that no one else I know does and is passionate about discovering new artists. I often come downstairs in the morning and find a mix CD waiting for me. He does it as a surprise and every CD is a combination of rare tracks from artists I know and new songs from people that I have never heard of. Our house always has music playing in it and I love that.

March 9th

Polka dots!

I love rainy days simply because I get to wear my funky wellies.

March 8th

Boo.

Apparently the fact that I turn 30 this year means that my body is falling apart (more than normal). I have no idea what I did but I tweaked my neck and ended up attached to a heating pad and doped up on muscle relaxants. This had better not be the way it is going to be from now on...

March 5th

Pride of Oxford

Tonight we went to the Red Lion with Matt, Cindy, Brian and Monica. The Red Lion may be my favorite restaurant in Indianapolis - an American take on an English Pub, owned by a half English couple that serves imported sausages and good beer. We had an amazing waitress who misheard my order and thought I wanted a White Zin. When I expressed my horror, she laughed and said that she was surprised because, "I thought you looked cool!" We ended up having a long dinner and laughing more than I had in a long time.

March 4th

"You've got red on you"

It was a very long week and so tonight we put in a frozen pizza and watched Shawn of the Dead. Last Halloween John went as Shawn with a cricket bat he borrowed from one of my Dad's coworkers. He did all of the blood himself!

March 3rd

Fabric reward for a hard day.

Today was my first day of seeing patients in the hospital. I came home emotionally and physically exhausted. After hearing about some of my friend's amazing days I had high hopes, but I ended up feeling a little disappointed. Not by my choice to go into nursing - but by my lack of ability.

There was so much that I didn't know how to do and didn't understand and I wish that the nurse I was working with had taken the time to explain it to me. From talking to my friends the thing that makes the difference in a nursing student's day is working with a nurse that takes the time to explain and encourage. I think today may have been a perfect example of what I DON'T want to be. For that alone it was a really valuable experience.

Also, I got to see kidneys. Real, live kidneys, pulsing away on a machine. That was pretty freaking sweet.

March 2nd

I have no idea what these will be...

There are very few things that I love as much as seeing the first green shoots of spring. They always seem so hopeful and are so welcome. This winter was felt especially brutal - I don't know if it was the weather or the deaths or a combination of the two, but seeing these makes me feel like it is going to be brighter soon.

March 1st

Remember!

I was changing the crib sheets at work and actually read the warning. I love the line "Remember: Children are ingenious." It makes me think that they are little evil geniuses plotting to take over the world. Which they might be, but they can't reach the doorhandles.

February 28th

Gratuitous Rufus Shot

I wish I could get as excited as he does about eating the same thing every day for four years.

February 26th

Pre-cursing

In an effort to keep ourselves healthier we bought an exercise bike with our tax return. It came in a box marked "some assembly required". I think anything with that instruction on it should also come with divorce papers...

February 24th

Quack quack!

Our hospital orientation was today and so we all treked over there together - it reminded me of Make Way for Ducklings, but it was nice to travel in a pack.

February 23rd

I cut off the D

The Dean's List for last semester is posted outside the office at school. I know it makes me a huge dork, but I am super proud that I am on it.

February 22nd

100% Polyester

John found this outfit from his childhood at his Mom's house. This is why we need to have kids.

February 21st

Self Portrait - Piers

Today is Piers' birthday. I can hardly believe that he is 28. Kier and I found this picture on a tea towel at Nanna's house when we were over and it is the most perfect portrait ever. My brother is one of the funniest people I have ever met and makes up for driving me crazy by telling some of the most hilarious stories ever.

February 20th

Bunny Mummy

Over to Mum and Dad's for an early birthday celebration for Piers. I feel so lucky that I live close enough to them to be able to pop over for lunch. After living across the country I will never take for granted proximity to the ones I love.

February 19th

Helmet hair

We had a dance at school and the theme was "Dance of the Decades". I decided to rock the 1960's look with some very large, hard hair and a shift dress. It was fun to do but after spending a whole day in curlers trying to achieve it I am thankful I don't have to do it everyday.

February 17th

Mari - deep in thought

Krista sent this to me. Sometimes a dull day is vastly improved with a picture of your best friend's baby.

February 16th

Gratuitous Rufus Shot

It's blurry but it is very hard to capture a 3.4lb rabbit trying to consume a 5lb nursing textbook.

February 15th

Yeah.

This made us laugh a stupid amount.

February 14th

This was full. Nomnomnom.

As a rule, we never do anything on Valentine's Day. I would rather just say "I love you" and try to live that way every single day than save it for a Hallmark holiday.
When we first got together I explained to John that, for me, a relationship wasn't made of grand gestures but a million tiny moments. He is wonderful about the tiny moments. I get flowers for no reason, I am always thanked for cooking dinner (after 5 years!), he gets movies he thinks I would like and leaves CD's for me to listen to in my car as well. He is thoughtful and kind.
This year he surprised me on Valentine's day. I got little cakes, taken to dinner and a gift certificate for clothes. It was better because I didn't expect it.

February 13th

Beautiful

When we were going through John's Mom's house we found this amazing, antique Singer. She wasn't my Mom and so I feel that I had no claim on anything in the house but if there was something that I wanted it was this. John brought it home to live with us, but I see its stay as temporary. I hope that I have a child that I can teach to sew and pass it along to.
